This involves taking a short break (not necessarily 1 full year) after high school before starting post-secondary education or employment for the purpose of travelling, volunteering, working as a short-term missionary, earning additional credits outside of the traditional classroom, or for a myriad of other reasons. If you are accepted at a post-secondary institution, most programs allow you to defer your acceptance for up to 1 year.
Gap year gains traction in Canada
Investigate different programs and organizations to do your gap year with. If none of the established programs interest you, do you have contacts with not-for-profit organizations to build your own experience?
Have a clear plan for your gap year, especially if you are planning to defer acceptance to a college/university.
Think it through: do the benefits outweigh the costs?
